Youth Sports Scholarships

Aim

The aim of the scholarship scheme is to assist local sporting talent to perform to their best ability, by assisting them financially so that they have access to greater sporting opportunities. The scholarships will be an incentive for young sportspersons to strive for. Obtaining a scholarship will enable the recipient to take the next step so that they can compete nationally and/or internationally. The scholarship scheme will underpin the goal of creating a culture of sporting success and excellence in the Wairarapa.

Eligibility

  • Applications are open to young persons over 12 years of age and under 21 years of age, as at the close off date for submitting an application.
  • Applicants must be at least a current Wairarapa regional representative of their chosen sport or prominent in their sport at a national level.
  • Applicants must have an annual income of $20,000 or less.
  • Any prospective applicant who has been convicted of a criminal offence punishable with a prison term is ineligible.
  • Applicants must submit a valid, complete application with all supporting documentation supplied, by the nominated closing date.

Value

The Trust will award up to 10 scholarships to a value of $3,000 each. In special circumstances the Trust may increase the value of a scholarship to $5,000.

Evaluation

All valid applications will be considered by the Assessment Board of the Trust. The Trust has an unfettered and absolute discretion as to the awarding of scholarships. The Board’s decision is final and no appeal process is available to unsuccessful applicants.

Closing and Announcement Dates

Applications will open each year on 1 March. Applications must be posted to the Trust at the email or physical address mentioned above, and reach us no later than 5pm on 31 May. Scholarship winners will be advised in June.

Term

The term of each scholarship is a calendar year commencing 1 July and concluding at 30 June. Scholarship funding must be expended during the year in which the scholarship was granted.

Funding rules

The scholarship funding is intended to assist the sportsperson to improve their performance and/or standing in their chosen sport. The following are examples of appropriate expenditure of funds:

  • Offsetting travel costs to attend training
  • Travel and accommodation costs to attend tournaments or events
  • Sports equipment, gear, uniforms or training aids
  • Sport science, mentoring, nutrition, psychology or performance related costs
  • Entry or affiliation fees, gym memberships
  • Costs levied by national associations to participate in national talent or squad programmes

Examples of inappropriate expenditure of funds are:

  • Tertiary education fees or costs – unless the course is sport related.
  • Holiday expenses
  • General living costs
  • Rent or accommodation costs for your normal place of residence

Privacy

The information provided by applicants will be used by the Board for the purposes of determining successful candidates. Some information, including a photo supplied by the applicant, may be used for media releases or promotional material relating to the Trust and the scholarship scheme. Applications may be subject to audit or regulatory oversight.

Audit

 The Trust reserves the right to audit the use of scholarship funds to verify their appropriate expenditure. Scholarship acceptance is dependent on agreeing to the terms and conditions of audit.
